The four of us finally crawled into the safe room to find Brock, Mario and David still awake. The Guide glowed a little brighter as we entered. Masi curled up on the floor near Brock and I joined him. The moon was high in the sky and everything ached. Keeping my eyes open was a challenge.

“Congratulations on completing the bonus quest,” said the Guide. In the dim light the moving wood on their face made my skin crawl. Everything inside me screamed that it was wrong. “Each of you will receive a reward at completion.” They bowed their head at us. “For this zone you need to defeat 3 bosses, and bring the gems back here. There are more than 3 bosses in this zone, and they are still laying claim to various areas. If you don’t hurry, you might not defeat enough before they defeat each other.”

Lark: You’ve got to be kidding me.

David: That makes things harder.

Brock: Doesn’t that mean they will gain levels as well?

I blinked a few times and leaned back against Masi. “This is complicated,” I whispered.

“This quest is strange, as is the zone. I’ve studied the area and the scans of the pillar,” said Hex. “I don’t understand it. The gems are not something the AI has created. I can’t get more data on them, and your identification ability doesn’t work on them. I want you out of here as soon as possible. But right now, you need some sleep.”

“Has the translation finished?”

“Not yet, but the parts that are done don’t make sense,” answered Hex. “As soon as it’s done, I’ll let you know.”

Sleep sounded perfect. Masi had already drifted off, and he was so furry and comfortable. I pulled my sleeping pad and blanket out of my inventory to curl up next to him. It would help on the stone floor. Dirt would be better, but I wasn’t going to sleep outside the safe room.

David: We need to rest, and we can plan in the morning.

Geo: Sleep on bare stone?

Karou: I told you to pack sleeping gear.

I ignored the conversation going on in the chat. How could someone not pack sleeping gear while traveling? Brock moved closer to me and motioned to set up next to me. I nodded. Having him in between me and the others was a great idea. But putting that to words was beyond me. Once I curled up on my sleeping pad, Masi crackled open an eye and scooted closer. A giant paw landed on the top of me but I didn’t care. The heavy weight felt safe, and sleep took over.
